Earth Hour. Your Vote Counts

Vote for EARTH (and against global warming) by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour TODAY Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

Wednesday Welcome: Silverware Gems

Each week I'm using Etsy's Pounce feature in order to discover new items "from undiscovered shops waiting for their first sale" as the Etsy site states. This week's welcome is extended to Silverware Gems of South Carolina. Creative shop owner Kathleen has been in the antiques business for many years and is currently the owner/operator of SilverCollect, a flatware replacement business. During the course of business she acquires some flatware pieces with issues that make them unsuitable for table use. And so she began turning the handles into the unique bracelets you see in her shop!

The Mighty Messenger Bag: It's Reversible!

A reversible messenger bag that can be used as an everyday carry-all or a diaper bag. This design was quite popular at my last show, and now I've been able to list a few in my etsy shop:

Remember that great fabric I won a while ago? This bag's flap is made from that fat quarter of Heather Bailey's Pop Daisy in Rose I received!

Wednesday Welcome: Nanantz

Each week I'm using Etsy's Pounce feature in order to discover new items "from undiscovered shops waiting for their first sale" as the Etsy site states. This week's welcome is extended to Nanantz in Texas. Nancy's stained glass pieces are made using the Tiffany copper foil method. She likes to think of her works as "window jewelry" and I agree; they're beautiful!

'Tis The Season?

Craft show season is upon us. As I've mentioned in the past; I am not a natural salesperson. So I am relieved that my one and only Spring show is done. Now I can enjoy shopping at craft shows! Even more exciting is the onset of garage sale season. I'm guessing that in other climates there are garage/yard/tag sales all year long, but here in northern Virginia we prefer to wait until early Spring so we can feel our hands when inspecting the merchandise.

I did enjoy meeting some very nice people at the craft show on Saturday, some were customers and others were vendors that I'll try to write about in the near future. The big news is that I was invited by the manager of a local shop to participate in a fun event this Thursday night. More on my role as I get the details, but the shop is called Blackberry's and it is located in Purcellville, VA. Thursday evening they are hosting an "Economic Relief Event" from 6:30 to 8:30pm. They'll have specials in the shop, prize drawings, live music, wine, and cheese. The wine featured is from Bluemont Vineyard and I'm excited to give it a try! The economic relief part of the fun is a cash-for-gold jewelry exchange. Should be interesting, I have heard people talk about getting real money at these events. I'll let you know how it goes although I'm not sure I have any jewelry of real value that I'd be willing to give up!
Stay tuned for more info...

We Go Together Like...

They go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Or like burgers & fries, politics & scandals, birthdays & cakes, Donny & Marie, Thanksgiving & food, love & hate, Mickey & Minnie, milk & cookies, needles & thread, Fred & Ginger, toddlers & meltdowns, mac & cheese, Simon & Garfunkel, pigeons & poop, celebs & gossip, Donkey & Shrek, bacon & eggs...

Cats and boxes, that is!

Or if you're cool enough to be a fan of Grease:
"We go together like ramma lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong
Remembered forever as shoo-bop sha whada whadda yippidy boom da boom
Chang chang changity chang shoo bop that's the way it should be
Waooo Yeah"
Er, um, WOW~ it sounds a LOT better than it looks in print!
